Tibial apophysis are often referred to as mating “spurs” or “hooks”. Males use these to lift up the female by her fangs before continuing to mate. They are located on the first set of legs before (see image).

Not of all species of tarantula possess tibial apophysis (mating “spurs” or “hooks”).
